Attorney–Trial Tech Prep Checklist
A courtroom trial technician can only execute as smoothly as the preparation they receive. Use this checklist before and during your trial to ensure seamless communication and presentation.
Before Trial
- Finalize Exhibit List:
- Number exhibits consistently.
- Eliminate duplicate or confusing labels.
- Deliver the final list to your technician in advance.
- Provide Digital Files:
- Share exhibits in their final format (PDFs, videos, demonstratives).
- Use a single shared folder structure for easy access.
- Confirm all files open correctly on the technician’s system.
- Deliver Daily Outlines:
- Provide witness outlines and planned exhibits at least 24 hours before use.
- Flag key demonstratives, deposition clips, or complex timelines.
- Identify Critical Moments:
- Rehearse high-stakes presentations with the technician.
- Walk through the timing of video clips, callouts, or document highlights.
During Trial
- Use Clear Cues:
- Refer to exhibits by exact numbers (“Exhibit 12”) instead of vague phrases (“that document”).
- For video, give specific clip IDs or timestamps.
- Stay in Sync:
- Establish a discreet cueing system (hand signals, keywords).
- Stick to rehearsed timing whenever possible.
- Communicate Changes Quickly:
- Notify the technician of witness order or exhibit changes as soon as they happen.
- Update digital files promptly to avoid confusion.
Post-Session Review
- Debrief Daily:
- Review what went smoothly and what needs adjustment.
- Flag exhibits or clips that will carry over to the next day.
- Update Materials:
- Provide revised outlines for the following day.
- Confirm all exhibits used are logged correctly for the record.
Pro Tip: Treat your trial technician like a co-counsel on the technical side. The more information they have, the more seamlessly your case narrative will flow.
